Artist of the Week
This week we have an exclusive interview with the artist Mark Inducil @markinducil, we spoke about his inspirations when creating his pieces, sci-fi culture, and the future of NFTs.
Hello Mark, thank you for taking the time to answer our questions today, your artwork was very surreal and it had such an impression on me. I really enjoyed viewing your work, it’s very aesthetically pleasing.
Thank you so much. I appreciate it.
So you are inspired by cinema, philosophy, and psychology. The latter two, I find especially intriguing. Could you tell us exactly how the inspiration from these subjects makes its way onto your work? What is the thought process behind this?
I’m very interested in human nature and also the nature of our reality. I was drawn towards those subjects since some of the life-questions that I’ve been asking myself are discussed or answered in those fields so when I think about a subject matter for my art I tend to express my feelings towards the human psyche or philosophical questions. I guess you can say that cinema influences my aesthetics and psychology and philosophy influences my theme or subject.
I was especially taken aback by your piece Internal Metamorphosis, the title teases us a little as to what is happening in the art, but can you explain to us the inspiration and meaning or even perhaps the history behind this piece?
I mentioned earlier that I had a lot of personal issues in the past so I wanted to create a self-portrait of the state of mind I was in as I try and restructure and revalue myself. It’s essentially a projection of a mind being reborn.
You have a couple of cyberpunk abstractions currently in your portfolio, what is it about that subgenre of sci-fi that appeals to you?
I just love everything about it; the aesthetics of a neon-lit environment, the atmosphere, the tropes, the characters, storylines, philosophical layers, the parallels with film noir. It’s a well of inspiration for me. I would also say that while my dreamscape work is usually derived from my personal experiences my cyberpunk work comes from being a fan and alternating between the two gives me the chance to rest my mind on one while working on the other.
You have been in the creative industry now for two decades, can you point to any moments in that time that you can say had a real effect on your artwork and direction as an artist?
I had a lot of personal issues to work through and I’m happy to say that I’m in a better place mentally now more than ever. One of the things that I’ve resolved for myself is the need to please other people and it affected me as an artist because it freed me from having the pressure of second-guessing what I wanted to do. It’s a very liberating feeling when you start becoming unafraid of failure.
Can you tell us what advantages of NFTs appeal to you the most and is there any particular direction digital art is going that you are particularly excited to witness going forward?
I absolutely love the NFT community. I wasn’t so sure at the beginning when I first heard about it because it sounded too good to be true but I was pleasantly surprised that it’s real. I love how easily I can share my art to collectors and other artists. It makes it easier for someone like me to be a full-time artist. I think somewhere down the line a new kind of artform or movement will eventually evolve out of it.
Thanks so much once more Mark, I am highly looking forward to what you dream up next.
Thank you so much for having me and I also must thank you for your wonderful questions. I loved answering them :)
